The Effects of Participation in Exercise and Nutrition Education Program on Physical Fitness, Dietary Habits and Nutrition Intake Status for Adolescents

Abstract

|
Background: The current health promotion programs lack education on nutrition. This study was conducted to assess the effect of exercise and nutrition education program on physical fitness, dietary habits and nutrition intake status of adolescents.
Methods: This intervention program was composed of exercise (twice a week) and 10 educational sessions on nutrition (once every three weeks) for 40 weeks, except for during summer vacation. Seventy three male students from 2 middle schools located in Seoul and Bucheon were enrolled. Anthropometric measurements, physical fitness, dietary habits and nutritional intake status were measured before and after the intervention.
Results: Mean height, weight and lean body mass were increased but waist circumference was reduced at post-intervention compared with pre-intervention. Cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular strength and power were significantly increased after the program. Also, continuous and systematic educational program on nutrition contributed to improved dietary habits among participants.
Conclusion: The exercise and education on nutrition had a positive effect on physical fitness and dietary habits of participants.
